About Una

Thanks for having a look around my site.

I’m Una McCann, a choir leader, performer and song-writer based in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

I grew up in a house where music and singing were as natural as eating.  My parents are wonderful musicians and singing was and still is very much part of being in our family house.

I went on to study music at 3rd level, earning a BA in Music and Ethnomusicology and a PGCE and taught for a number of years in secondary schools.

My heart always lay in community work though and I found my way back into group singing pretty organically.

I had been under the illusion that choirs needed to be formal, sheet-music-reading, exclusive scenarios in which a funky/ folkie/ ear -led musician like me wouldn’t be welcome.  Then I discovered group singing at the wonderful Earthsong camps, joined the Natural Voice Network and a whole other world of singing opened up to me.  Eureka!

I’ve now been leading singing in the community professionally for 14 years.  It is my full time job. I love that my life is dedicated to both creativity and community. The community that grows around a song circle is incredible. Trust and friendship blossom. The group is in harmony.

Over the last few years I’ve been writing material to sing with my choirs and groups. Gone however are the inward facing songs of my earlier singer-songwriter days, now my songs reflect my views about life, spirituality, human connection and the wonderful power of singing in community.

The next year I’ll be travelling a bit; bringing my songs to Telford, Carlow, Cork, Sligo, Cornwall, Bristol, Glasgow, Morocco, and Devon.  Hopefully we will sing together somewhere along the way.
